Thank you for your interest in the Hartley Lab! We are currently recruiting children and adolescents ages 2-17 for a number of studies. Our studies involve at least one visit to our lab at New York University or online participation. Your child/children will receive compensation for their participation. If you are interested in having your child participate in our research, please click the "Sign Up" button below to provide us with your contact information, so we can arrange to reach out about our research and confirm your child's eligibility.

Common Questions:
What will my child be doing?
At the Hartley Lab we collect different kinds of information. To understand your child's emotional states, their family life, and their development, we will have them fill out questionnaires. To understand how they respond to certain conditions we will have them play computer games. To examine how their brains work functionally while doing particular tasks, we will have them undergo an MRI scan. None of our tasks are harmful to your child.
You will be informed of the tasks that your child will be exposed to before you decide if you would like to have your child participate. Furthermore, if your child is at all uncomfortable during any part of the experiment they are free to stop. They will be reminded of this throughout the experiment.

Are MRI scans safe?
There are no known or foreseeable risks or side effects associated with MRI scanning procedures. Only individuals who have electrically, magnetically or mechanically activated implants, or metal in or on their bodies are at risk, because the MRI machine uses a huge magnet to take the images. Therefore, we screen all potential participants to insure that they are safe to have an MRI and carefully remove all metal from eligible participants before they are approved to enter the MRI environment. We will provide more detailed information about MRI scanning if you and your child or teen come in to participate.
Will my child be compensated?
For in-person studies your child will receive monetary compensation for their participation (at least $15/hour). Also, if they are interested, we will teach them about how research in the field of psychobiology is conducted. Furthermore, if your child has participated in an MRI study, they will receive a photo of their brain.
For online studies your child will receive an Amazon gift card as compensation for each study they complete. Please allow our staff 5-6 days to process your child's study submissions. The gift card should be sent to the email you provided when you signed up your child for our database. If 7 days have passed and you haven’t received an email with the gift card, please contact our team via email. We will do our best to make sure your child gets compensated for their participation in a timely manner.

What do I do if the online game won't load properly?
Please check your internet connection, and close all other tabs on your computer. If the game still won’t load, please contact the Hartley lab team via email along with your child's subject ID and the name of the study.
Will I have to do anything?
For in-person studies, we do ask that you accompany your child to their appointment so we can receive your written consent for their participation. You may also be asked to fill out questionnaires that will provide us with more information about your child.
