Common Questions:

What will I be doing?

At the Hartley Lab we collect different kinds of information. To understand your affective states we will have you fill out questionnaires. To understand how you respond to certain conditions we will have you play computer games. To examine how your brains work functionally while doing particular tasks, we will have you undergo an MRI scan. None of our tasks are harmful.

You will be informed of the tasks that you will be exposed to, before you decide if you would like to participate. Furthermore, if you are at all uncomfortable during any part of the experiment you may stop.

Will I be compensated?

For in-person studies you will receive monetary compensation for your participation (at least $15/hour).  Also, if you have participated in an MRI study, you will receive a photo of your brain if you would like one.

For online studies you will receive an Amazon gift card for each study you complete. Please allow our staff 5-6 days to process your study submissions. The gift card should be sent to the email you provided when you signed up for our database. If 7 days have passed and you haven’t received an email with the gift card code, please contact our team via email. We will do our best to make sure you get compensated for your participation in a timely manner.

Are MRI scans safe?

There are no known or foreseeable risks or side effects associated with MRI scanning procedures. Only individuals who have electrically, magnetically or mechanically activated implants, or metal in or on their bodies are at risk, because the MRI machine uses a huge magnet to take the images. Therefore, we screen all potential participants to insure that they are safe to have an MRI and carefully remove all metal from eligible participants before they are approved to enter the MRI environment. We will provide more detailed information about MRI scanning if you come in to participate.
What do I do if the online game won't load properly?
Please check your internet connection, and close all other tabs on your computer. If the game still won’t load, please contact the Hartley lab team via email along with your subject ID and the name of the study.
